Notes & Reviews:

Charles-Auguste de Beriot numbers among the greatest of the great violin virtuosos of the early 19th century. A generation earlier violinists such as Viotti, Rodolphe, Kreutzer, and Pierre Rode had founded the European dominance of the Franco-Belgian violin school. Beriot, a Belgian by birth, continued this tradition. Although he celebrated great triumphs throughout Europe as a virtuoso and gained special fame with his concerts together with his wife, the famous singer Maria Malibran, who accompanied him on the piano, he remained a modest man who did not behave like a star attraction and cultivated many interests: Robert Schumann characterized him as a "very quiet but fine man." Like all the great soloists of the 19th century, Beriot composed his music for himself, and his ten violin concertos rank with his most ambitious works. Here he shows that doing without symphonic design (in the sense of motivic-thematic work) does not necessarily entail a lack of specifically orchestral sound or formal imagination. His melodic invention is of a nobility and natural beauty that are absolutely captivating.
