Notes & Reviews:
In 1785, Franz Joseph Haydn was commissioned by Francisco de Paula Maria de Micon, Marquis of Merito, to compose an orchestral work based on the last seven words of Christ according to the Gospels. While the version for string quartet has gained greater popularity, the string orchestra version - heard here played on period instruments under the direction of Barry Sargent - possesses an ethereal gravitas unusual for the often jocular Haydn.
