Notes & Reviews:

Giovanni Pacicni's first opera, 'Annetta e Lucindo' was produced in 1813, the year of Rossini's 'L'Italiana in Algeri'; his last, 'Berta,' was produced in 1867, the year of Verdi's 'Don Carlos.' It doesn't take a calculator to realize the enormous changes in musical styles and taste that took place during the fifty-four years he was composing. Pacini and Rossini stand together as the two 19th century Italian composers who, more than any others, demanded the most exacting standards of bravura singing. And though the quality of Pacini's music can be uneven, he was also capable of moments of magical enchantment and most serene and lyrical beauty, as may be heard here.
