Notes & Reviews:
"The Witches of Venice is a children's book by Beni Montresor that tells the story of children who appear from magical plants (though they are not pod people), witches, ogres, kings, and more. Glass set it to music in 1995 (in operatic form) for singers and his ensemble. This very beautiful release packages the CD, story, and libretto in the manner of a tiny book for children, complete with illustrations. The singers all deliver their parts well, though the mix often seems to bury them behind a glittering array of electronic instruments and other sound effects. The music is attractive and appealing; it shows once more Glass's deftness as a theater composer, and the preference for short numbers makes the whole package admirably suited for children." -ARGNotes & Reviews:
