Notes & Reviews:

Michael Oesterle, Serge Provost and Gilles Tremblay represent three generations of Quebec composers. Oesterle was born in Ulm, Germany and immigrated to Canada in 1982, and since 1996 has been living in Montreal. Annus Mirabilis is a tribute to the great physicist on the centennial of the key year in his life, 1905, in which he gave birth to modern physics, unveiling the best-known equation in history: EMC2. Serge Provost is one of the most active composers of his generation. His works adopt a wide-angle approach, drawing inspiration from literature, architecture and the arts in general. His piece suggests architectural plans as a utopia and form of social critique, gleaned from the Venice Biennale. Experimentation has always been at the heart of Gilles Tremblay 's music, in particular through the importance given to the acoustical properties of natural resonances. His work translates into sound a beloved poem by Bernard Levy that asks the metaphysical question, "When does time begin? At what hour? At what instant? At which first instant?" Founded in 1989 by pianist and conductor Lorraine Vaillancourt, the Nouvel Ensemble Moderne 's repertoire includes music from all continents and features many premieres. Its main purpose is to give modern music the time and attention it needs in order to transmit most convincingly the composers ' goals.
