Notes & Reviews:

"This disc is a welcome reminder of the particular virtues of a kind of music less prominent than it once was. The works included centre on the mid-1960s, and Lutyens was at her finest in the String Trio (1964), where her instinctive feeling for the cogency and drama of Webern's 12-tone style yields music of uninhibited energy, and a marvellously spontaneous control of the range of sound materials that this medium makes available what Bayan Northcott's notes call the "fine-spun austerity" of Lutyens's most characteristic idiom ensures that her music never emulates the protracted rambling of some more mainstream English pastoralists everything is very well performed and the whole disc is a salutary reminder that music very different from Shostakovich's has something significant to say in 2006 and beyond." -Gramophone
