Notes & Reviews:

"Oleg Marshev, Danacord's industrious pianist, offers a richly comprehensive programme, coupling the B minor Sonata with Tausig's arrangement of Tasso and Liszt's own arrangement of "Gretchen" from A Faust Symphony. And having recently reviewed several discs of Liszt's symphonic poems in their original orchestral guise, it was fascinating to hear them recreated with such uncanny pianistic skill by both the composer and his most celebrated pupil. At the same time much of their success on disc is due to Marshev, who meets every outsize demand with an unflagging and awe-inspiring brio. Few pianists could command a greater or more compulsive sense of Tasso's rhetorical storms, and he is no less attuned to the more mystical and seraphic "Gretchen".

In the Sonata Marshev hurls himself at the climaxes with an imperious all-Russian mastery, and if he is less happy in those many pages of lyrical introspection or in the retrospective coda where, as one writer put it, the music is all menacing sighs and glassy threats, his energy and enthusiasm are almost palpable." -Gramophone
