Notes & Reviews:

The young British composer James Cook, whose music is clearly within the traditions of his predecessors Vaughan-Williams, Herbert Howells and Edmund Rubbra, studied at Oxford University and worked for a time at Eton College. Although primarily a composer of sacred vocal music, he has during the past couple of years written a sizeable body of work for the organ as well as several pieces for the rarely heard combination of organ and harp. All of the music on this CD was inspired by the concept of heaven and the soul's journey there. The music centers around the organ, which is combined with the harp (that most celestial of instruments) and voices, in particular the soprano voice and unaccompanied choir. The two songs are presented as the first and last tracks, framing the more substantial works within. The only choral piece, In Heaven Shall All be Love, forms the centerpiece of the program. Cook's lovely, romantic choral music can also be heard on DD25023 and DD25027, and a selection of works for the organ can be heard on DD25031.
