Notes & Reviews:
The Polhymnia Ensemble was founded in 1994 by Rachel Szekely with a special commitment to contemporary music, performing works written for them by George Barcos, Daniel Bouldjoua, Eric Gaudlibert, Jean-Paul Liardet and many others. They have also explored the repertoire of earlier centuries, but this highly original CD exemplifies their particular interests. Jehan Alain and Andre Caplet were French composers of distinctive and highly personal styles. Switzerland was the home of both Burkhard and Zbinden. Active in church music and teaching, Burkhard was one of the most influential composers of his generation, and was mentor to many important Swiss composers such as Klaus Huber, Rudolf Kelterborn, Armin Schibler and Ernst Widmer. Zbinden began his career in jazz, and eventually became an important member of the Radio Suisse Romande and a highly prolific composer. The Polyhymnia Ensemble has performed in Switzerland, France, Romania, Sweden and Hungary. This unusual CD is their first for this label.
