Notes & Reviews:

When cellist Emanuel Feuermann signed with RCA Victor, the company wanted to create a chamber music group comparable to the Thibaud, Casals and Cortot Trio of the 1920s. In the summer of 1940 some private sessions took place in California with Heifetz, Feuermann and Rubinstein, but all three were busy with their respective concert schedules. The war in Europe effectively prevented American musicians performing there and so "a dream came true," a series of sessions scheduled for 1941. The initial trio recording was not a piano trio but a string trio with violist William Primrose. In fact, the first recordings were duos: Primrose and Heifetz performing Mozart, with Feuermann and Primrose recording Beethoven. The three musicians joined forces for the Dohnanyi and Mozart heard on this reissue. Rubinstein then joined Heifetz and Feuermann for these classic interpretations of the Brahms, Beethoven and Schubert. Rubinstein was a pianist in the 19th century Romantic tradition, and was opposed in style to the manner of Heifetz. But such differences, probably after some compromise, produced some very happy results. The original 78s were not sold in Japan and Europe during the war. Feuermann died in May 1942 at the age of 39 after a simple operation, and a promise of more trio recordings could not be fulfilled. These five recordings for which he plays will always be treasured.
