Notes & Reviews:
Christmas in Old Salem is filled with rich and unique traditions. Visitors to town during the holiday season find their senses aroused by the scents of wood smoke and ginger wafting from ovens where sweet cakes bake, melodies of graceful hymns accompanied by jovial trombones, and bright red ribbons that accent diminutive beeswax candles lighted for a Lovefeast. Inspiration can be found in the extraordinary decoration known as the Putz or by gazing into the glow of the many-pointed Moravian stars that keep vigil over front porches through the chilly nights. Few people today are aware that the distinctive customs associated with Moravian Christmas took shape during the early 19th century. The Christmas trees, gingerbread houses, advent stars and familiar carols integral to modern American Christmas have some root in Moravian traditions.
