Conductor Ensemble Composer

Notes & Reviews:

"Danish composer Erik Bach (b 1946) writes in a tonal, mostly consonant harmonic language that will remind you of composers who lived some time ago. This is true in a general way in Astrotrain (1988), a more definite way in Berlin Revisited (2002)-where you might swear you're hearing Strauss-and very specific ways in Reflections (1973). Here Bach quotes Chopin verbatim, giving a clarinetist a melody from one of the piano preludes. We also hear some minimalism, powerful doses of Strauss, and a brief but vivid homage to Bruckner. It's all done very well, because Bach is a skilled composer who manages to take us back in time while sounding new. Bo Holten's Aarhus Symphony plays with conviction, making this a lovely listening experience. -ARG
