Notes & Reviews:

"These are piano transcriptions, by the composer, of selections from two of his lesserknown ballets. While the ten piano pieces from his Romeo and Juliet are often performed and recorded (two reviews in Nov/Dec 2006), I am not aware of any other recordings of these piano versions. At first hearing I found myself quite comfortable in Prokofieff's very recognizable style. Later hearings confirmed that Ivanova delivers clean, thoughtful, and idiomatic performances; but the music itself never really grabbed me as the Romeo and Juliet pieces did when I first discovered them. There are several nice lyrical sections, but the more energetic music strikes me as rather routine Prokofieff. I would place these transcriptions in a category with Piano Sonatas 4 and 5-good works, but destined to be forever in the shadows of masterpieces in the same genre by the same composer. As an aficionado of piano transcriptions, I am pleased to make the acquaintance of these works and thankful to CPO for great sound, informative notes, and most important, the fine pianism of Ivanova." -ARG
