Notes & Reviews:

Margarete Klose was the celebrated prima dramatic contralto of the Staatsoper Unter den Linden. Her strong personality influenced the Berlin opera scene for a generation. Her magnificently rich, soft and voluminous voice was never a mere utility; it always flowed, filled with expression, sustained by artistic fervor. It was always the instrument of a singer-actress who identified with the female figures of the opera stage through large and noble gestures. She was born in Berlin. After initially choosing a practical profession, she had her voice trained by teachers like Franz Marschalk. Following early engagements in Ulm and Mannheim, Klose returned to Berlin where in 1931 she joined the Staatsoper Unter den Linden. Apart from some guest appearances at other venues, the Staatsoper was her true home. She remained one of the great contraltos there until 1961, being indispensable as Brangane, Fricka, Clytemnestra and Kostelnicka. This Wagner singer par excellence was naturally also in demand at the Bayreuth Festival. She was never one of those prima donnas who are at home nowhere and everywhere; she always thought of herself as an ensemble member. After the age of sixty she still occasionally sang on the stage: her humorous, motherly Mrs. Herring in Britten 's Albert Herring was unforgettable. Into her final years she could still be heard in lieder recitals, and accepted fame with humor and retained her mental vigor into old age.
