Notes & Reviews:

Born in Washington in 1943, Morten Lauridsen has been chair of the department of composition at the University of Southern California for more than a decade. His works have been recorded on more than one hundred CDs, and he was recently ranked the most-performed American choral composer in history. O Magnum Mysterium is the best known of his sacred a cappella motets and has become one of publisher Theodore Presser's best-selling choral octavos. It offers one of the most haunting vistas of Lauridsen's often serenely mystical style. Also high on the list of choir favorites is his Madrigali: Six "Firesongs" on Italian Renaissance Poems. Lux Aeterna, a five-movement work, has become a choral concert staple; Les Chansons des Roses is one of his seven major vocal cycles that is not as familiar as the others, but is no less attractive.
