Formed at the Shanghai Conservatory in 1983, the Shanghai String Quartet has been hailed as one of the world 's premiere ensembles. The members of this group are known for their passionate musicality, astounding technique and multicultural innovations. Regularly touring the major music centers of Europe and North America, the Shanghai Quartet has performed in London, Hamburg, Milan and Amsterdam, as well as in Detroit, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., where they appear frequently at the Freer Gallery. In addition to performing the great works of the standard repertoire, the Quartet has a long history of championing new music. Among recent premieres were the Quartet No. 2, Op. 60 of Lowell Lieberman and a work by Bright Sheng. Winners of the prestigious Chicago Discovery Competition in 1987, the Quartet took second place at the Portsmouth International String Quartet Competition (now the London International Competition) in 1985 and was nominated for the Asahi Broadcasting Company 's International Music Award after their first tour of the Far East in 1996.
