Notes & Reviews:

This CD is a sequel to Divine Art DD25026, which included the Joseph Czerny arrangement of the Trout Quintet. This new volume turns our attention to the remarkable Josef von Gahy (1793-1864). He was not a professional musician but a civil servant from Hungary, who came to know Schubert after moving to Vienna. Before long the men were firm friends and Gahy became Schubert 's favorite piano duet partner, playing original works for duo as well as arrangements of other 's music, including the Beethoven Symphonies. On his own, Gahy became a favorite at grand balls and gatherings, proving a spirited champion of Schubert 's works. Years after Schubert 's death, Gahy transcribed about thirty of Schubert 's works, both instrumental and vocal, for piano duet. Some of the works include the Octet, the String Quintet and the G-Major String Quartet. Such was Gahy 's humility and devotion that his transcriptions are meticulously faithful to the originals - not "recreations" as Czerny 's version of the Trout Quintet had been. As a bonus, the Clemmow Duo performs a Schubert original, the charming Rondo in D-Major. Although the subtitle Our friendship is constant probably came from the publisher Diabelli, it certainly fits its amiable character. A touching memorial to a true friendship.
