Notes & Reviews:

This recording revives the art of transcription when, before the days of recording, works for orchestra such as the Beethoven Symphonies or the Vivaldi Concerto Grossi would be arranged for solo piano, piano four-hands, or perhaps for wind instruments with accompaniment. Many of the works on this disc, in their original forms, had a superficial or overt connection to jazz, so it 's "natural" to hear the bluesy slow movement of the Ravel Concerto arranged for saxophone and piano and the Gershwin works, heard in many guises over the years, seem right at home in this setting. The Austrian composer Reinhard Siefert has written his modern pieces in a style that conjures up the 1930 's period perfectly. Born in Dusseldorf, Germany, Klaus Gesing began his studies in Holland. After some years with classical clarinet, he switched to tenor saxophone. He was invited to the United States by one of his teachers, the renowned Dave Liebman, where Gesing furthered his jazz performing with his own groups. A student of Paul Badura-Skoda in Austria and later his duo-performing partner, Sylvaine Ilario founded the Beethoven Ensemble Wien in 1996 and has performed all over Europe and North America. Seeking a new musical outlet, she also plays with composer Roland Batik, well-known jazz/classical musician. For this CD she has composed all of the arrangements.
