Notes & Reviews:
Christians celebrate and praise God for the death and resurrection of Jesus. Faith is rooted in the daily experience of the presence of the Risen Christ. Centuries of worship and prayer have strengthened this Faith and out of it has developed a Liturgy rich in poetry and prose, music and ceremonial. Hereford Cathedral Choir sings a full program of music at no less than 14 services during Holy Week: starting with the stirring procession of Psalms, moving through the quiet solemnity of Maundy Thursday and on to the stark proclamation of the Cross and the coming of light into the darkness of Easter Eve, then followed at last by the great shout Christ is Risen and the alleluias of Easter morning. Hard and constant rehearsal mixes with the emotional demands of music ranging from the restraint of plainsong to the exhilaration of the settings and anthems sung on this disc. The singers finish the week tired yet thrilled and thankful to have done so much, a pale reflection of the achievement of the Savior who passed from death to life, but nevertheless an authentic offering of self which shares in it.
