Notes & Reviews:

Maybe it 's the air or the water, but a lot of European and Pacific Rim countries, over the years, have produced many symphonic composers who got their starts in rock or jazz (the bestknown example might be Latvia 's Imants Kalnins). Bruce Cale is yet another, having spent thirty years devoted to playing and composing jazz in Australia, the UK and in the United States (one of his recordings, The Bruce Cale Quartet, can be heard on TP175). He has worked with such performers as Phil Woods, Ernie Watts, Toshiko Akiyoshi and John Klemmer, to name a few. But in 1974, while working in Los Angeles, he received a commission from the Los Angeles Philharmonic 's bassoonist, Frederick Dutton, to compose a piece for a contemporary music festival. This led to further interest in "classical" music, and some of the results of many years work can be heard on this CD. What is refreshing is that these pieces are not pretentious or "showy." For the most part, the works are very subtle in their impact. In fact, the closing pages of the Violin Concerto reveal something not heard in much modern music: a hushed, haunting beauty. The Cello Concerto is probably the most overt in its use of jazz elements, particularly in the use of the soprano voice. As the American composer George Russell has put it, "Bruce Cale is a marvelously imaginative, compelling composerhis use of the harmonic palette is uniquely his ownhe is unafraid of beauty; his work is thrilling in its complexity and scope."
