Notes & Reviews:

Wolfgang Bottenberg was born in Frankfurt/Main. He has been living in Canada since 1958, studying music in Edmonton and Cincinnati, Ohio. He has taught music theory and composition first at Arcadia University (1964-73) and then at Concordia University, where he retired as Professor emeritus in 1998. His numerous compositions include an opera (Inuk) and large-scale works for orchestra and voices, but his preference is for chamber music. The four works featured on this disc are representative of a kind of postmodern neoclassical style. Like most composers of the late 20th century, he has explored in earlier compositions a great variety of contemporary styles, but gradually his sensitivities led him to return to the tonality and forms of the classical tradition. His preferences are for the exploration of subtle deviations from the classical norm rather than its radical rejection. Among his idiomatic tendencies are a conscious exploration of modality, a search for cadential alternatives, and an essentially contrapuntal approach to musical texture.
