Notes & Reviews:

"This set is part of a project to record the complete works of Gabriel Pierne (1863-1937). Before listening to this recording I thought of Pierne as an important conductor who wrote a little bit of lightweight salon music, but after enjoying these superb performances of his chamber music it is clear that he is was as vital a composer as he was a conductor. The first disc has a few short pieces for violin and piano from the 1880s and a charming sonata from 1900 written in the spirit of Cesar Franck (Pierne's teacher) that bears homage to Saint-Saens, Faure, and Grieg. As much as I like the Violin Sonata, it is the Piano Quintet (1917) that is the real treasure here for me. Pierne's instrumental colors and effects are a lot like colors and effects used by Debussy and Ravel (he conducted the first performances of Ravel's Daphnis and Chloe and Debussy's Iberia), but the structure and substance of the Quintet is completely original. The piece is exotic and indulgent, yet still remarkably straightforward, with clear voices, interesting rhythms, and transparent textures. I would consider it equal in quality to the quintets by Farrenc, Schumann, Faure, and Franck." -ARG
