Notes & Reviews:

From the practically inexhaustible number of Lieder, songs, and ballads by Brecht and Eisler, 22 can be heard on this CD. Among these are classics, as well as some which have never been released on CD before. Even those works that were better known were until this CD only available on old Lps. The sequence of songs is interrupted by the series of recollections which Hanns Eisler left to posterity. In 1958, Nathan Notowicz and Hans Bunge started recording their conversations with the composer on tape, initially for archival purposes and in primitive sound quality, as the recordings were not intended for publication. These revealed not only interesting facts but also Eisler's talents as a sharp-witted conversationalist and brilliant narrator. He depicted Brecht's life with respect - and at the same time as a series of amusing episodes, in which characters such as Thomas Mann, Stefan Zweig, Arnold Schoenberg, or Charlie Chaplin appeared as protagonists. Starting in 1965, parts of the conversations were made publicly available by Radio DDR in 20 broadcasts, with the first print edition appearing in 1970/71.
