Notes & Reviews:

In 1955, the Berlin Staatsoper staged a series of splendid premieres to mark the reopening of the richly traditional opera house, which had risen up from the bombed ruins. The ensemble which assembled on the night of September 18, 1955 to perform the third presentation in the series included Karl Schmitt-Walter, an artist whom Berlin music lovers had esteemed as one of the best and most versatile baritones for two decades and who had also long since left an indelible impression in other opera centers of the world. Schmitt-Walter's guest appearance as Don Giovanni in Mozart's opera roused the audience to such a pitch of enthusiasm that he had to repeat his Champagne song in front of the closed curtain. The intensity and flexibility of his acting, his musical brio and the way he used his voice to express precise emotions made him - as press reviews confirmed - "the ideal performer of this great phenomenon of the world's opera literature," a brilliant character portrayer who could identify in every detail with the personality of that passion-driven feudal lord who rode roughshod over people's lives and feelings, in short, a Mozartian Don Giovanni par excellence. Karl Schmitt-Walter called that performance of Don Giovanni at the Berl.in Staatsoper the most beautiful and greatest of his career.
