Notes & Reviews:

This renowned recording was made in 1928/29 although one side (The Flower Song) was made in early 1927, under the direction not of Cohen but of Philippe Gaubert. Though advertised as complete on its original issue, it excludes all dialogue and recitatives, and like most opera albums of the day, was (to quote from the sleeve notes) "slightly abridged for recording purposes under the supervision of musical authorities." Hence some arias are edited or shortened to fit them on a 12" 78 rpm side. The set was released in the UK on February 2, 1929 and remained in the EMI British catalogue until March 1949. The libretto as printed in this booklet follows as closely as possible the actual words sung, with reference also made to the definitive 1895 edition by Schirmer.
