Otto Klemperer made his debut in 1906 in Orphee aux Enfers by Offenbach. A year later he met Gustav Mahler who arranged a post as choirmaster of the German Opera in Prague for him. He soon became director of music there and made his debut with Der Freischutz. In 1910, he was named director of music for the City Theater in Hamburg. Jobs in Barmen, Strasbourg and Cologne followed. In 1920, he conducted the world premiere of Die Tote Stadt by Korngold in Cologne. He then went to Wiesbaden and then Berlin. In 1933, he left Germany and went to Los Angeles and then Pittsburgh. He also studied composition with Schoenberg. In 1955, he was appointed conductor for life of London's Philharmonia Orchestra and from 1961 on, he made regular appearances at Covent Garden from which this live performance is drawn.
