Notes & Reviews:

Many events, books and compact discs mark the two hundred and fiftieth anniversary of Mozart's birth. It is also just over 200 years since Mozart died; fortuitously, just over one hundred years since the first sound recordings were made. This album contains a selection of the earliest recordings of Mozart's music, most, if not all of them first recordings, and one by an artist born within living memory of Mozart's lifetime. From these recordings we can glean some notions of how these works were performed a century ago, and very interesting and instructive this can be. However, we must be very wary of attempts to read into these recordings how Mozart was performed yet a century earlier. Haydn wrote this tribute to Mozart's father in 1785. "I declare before God and as an honest man that I acknowledge your son as the greatest composer of whom I have ever heard; he has taste and possesses the most profound skills of composition."
