Notes & Reviews:

On Vol. 19 Gerhard Weinberger interprets more organ works ascribed to J. S. Bach but of doubtful authenticity on the Silbermann organ in the Dresden court chapel, the last and greatest instrument by Gottfried Silbermann, the Court and Land Organ Builder to the King of Poland and Prince Elector of Saxony. The pipework in its entirety, regierwerk, wind chests, keyboards, and stop knobs were removed to storage during World War II, with the result that the instrument is the only one of the three Dresden organs by Silbermann that is still extant. After several restorations this important instrument from the late baroque in Saxony is now again playable in its original sound splendor. It is on this organ that Weinberg - finally! - interprets Bach's most famous organ work, the Toccata in D minor. Since recent decades have been marked by increasingly strong challenges to Bach's authorship, this original composition has been placed among the works of doubtful authenticity here. Whoever wrote it, its sound cascade full of dramatics and wild virtuosity continues to be irresistible!
