Notes & Reviews:

Anneliese Rothenberger, who lives at Schloss Salenstein on the Swiss side of Lake Constance, celebrated her 80th birthday on June 19, 2006. She made her last public appearance in 1989, and was known as one of the sweetest personalities among the sopranos of her time and altogether an exception among the German ones. The solid training she received at the College of Music in her native Mannheim produced a voice that was described as warm and bright, light and silvery. That predestined her for coloratura soubrette and lyrical roles. Yet the effect of her voice would have been lost without her unique stage presence. Rothenberger was admired for her distinctive, stylish elegance and for the intelligence she brought to bear on her acting. She began appearing annually at the Salzburg Festival in the 1950s, a period when she was a member of the opera ensembles in Hamburg and Vienna. She was jubilantly received as Zdenka alongside Lisa della Casa in Strauss' Arabella in 1960 at the Metropolitan Opera, where she remained a guest for many years. She was loved by millions of Germans in the 1960s; to most people, she was probably better known than Maria Callas. This selective retrospective of recordings she made with the Staatskapelle of Dresden allows us to hear this exceptional talent in all her glory. May she spend the evening of her life pleasantly and in peace.
