Notes & Reviews:

The young British composer James Cook studied composition at Oxford University at post-graduate level and has worked briefly at Eton College. Although mainly a composer of sacred choral music, he has recently begun to write more instrumental music, mostly for organ and in January he completed his seventh Organ Symphony. He writes, "This collection of sacred organ music is divided into two sequences: disc one is titled Exequy after the central work on the disc; it means "funeral song" and is indeed an apt description of the music throughout. All of the music on CD1 shares a common tone and key. All of the works are written in the key of a-minor and is melancholy in both mood and mode. Disc 2, Elysium, refers to the "heavenly abode of the dead," and indeed the music on this disc does scale the Olympian heights, as it contains the Symphonia Melodia, the most grandiose of my seven organ Symphonies. However, also represented is a range of pieces on a smaller scale, including one with alto voice, Plerophoria." The previous four discs on Divine Arts devoted to James Cook (DD25023, 25027, 25031 and 24121) revealed a composer greatly indebted not only to his faith but to the grand choral traditions of Elgar, Vaughan-Williams and Herbert Howells. But of greater significance is Cook's continuation of a tradition started by the renowned French composers more than a century ago: the Organ Symphony, and Cook is today's most important proponent of this form.
