Notes & Reviews:

Jean Balissat, born in Lausanne, was drawn to composing and conducting at an early age, studying both in his hometown and in Geneva. Balissat has composed works for orchestra, chamber music groups, brass bands and solo instrumentalists. He also taught for many years at the Conservatories in Lausanne and Geneva. Jean Perrin, also born in Lausanne, studied both composition and piano (among his teachers were Nadia Boulanger, Darius Milhaud and Edwin Fischer). In later years he was a professor at the Conservatories of Lausanne and Sion. His wide-ranging catalog includes some 60 works. It's fitting that these composers should be represented by these striking works for string orchestra; recall that Arthur Honegger was Swiss and that one of his most famous works was the Symphony No. 2 for strings. Balissat has taken the general style of that work and expanded upon it in his intense, energetic Sinfonietta. Perrin, the more traditional of the two, has written some delightful music, particularly the Berceuse, Chorale and Waltz, which reveals how this composer held the classical era in high esteem.
