Notes & Reviews:

It's gratifying in our modern, media-saturated times, to find that a composer's appeal goes beyond the boundaries of his or her native country. You just know that somewhere in the Ukraine there has to be an Arnold Bax Appreciation Society. So it is with these musicians in Sweden's capital regarding the music of Francis Poulenc. The Stockholm Poulenc Ensemble was founded by Sonny Jansson in 1998. Naturally they have an affinity for modern Scandinavian choral music but also devote their attention to the music of Les Six. Poulenc himself was a man of many faces, a composer who could write parlor music for the piano, virtuoso sonatas for wind instruments, and a childrens' piece about a certain elephant named Barbar. He could also write a serious opera about nuns facing death for their beliefs. This enterprising collection allows us to hear the great variety of music Poulenc wrote, both religious and secular, as performed by a devoted group of specialists.
