Notes & Reviews:

Ginette Neveu (1919-1949) was born in Paris into a musical family. Her brother can be heard on this recording, and she was also the grandniece of Charles-Marie Widor. A child prodigy, Ginette took lessons from her mother and made her solo debut at the age of seven with the Colonne Orchestra in Paris performing Bruch's Concerto No. 1. She attended the Paris Conservatory where she studied under Georges Enescu, Nadia Boulanger and Carl Flesch. At 15 she achieved worldwide fame by winning the Wieniawski Violin Competition over 180 contestants, including David Oistrakh. She was immediately signed to an extensive touring contract that took her to Germany, Poland, the Soviet Union, the United States and Canada. After World War II, she made her London debut in 1945 accompanied by her brother. Noted for her intensity, power and impeccable sonority (in these recorded performances, virtuosity is subjugated to emotion throughout, and the music breathes with a unique spontaneity), Neveu is recognized as one of the world's greatest violinists. Alas, she gave her final concert on October 20, 1949. A week later, she and Jean-Paul boarded an Air France Flight which crashed into a mountain after two failed attempts to make a landing at the San Miguel Island airport in the Azores.
