Notes & Reviews:

Maria von Ilosvay was born in Budapest. She received her vocal training at the Conservatory there and at Vienna's Academy of Music. In 1937 she won First Prize at the International Singing Competition in Vienna. This led to an engagement with the Salzburg International Opera Guild, which was preparing an American tour managed by the celebrated impresario Sol Hurok. She was sensationally successful as Dorabella in Cosi fan tutte. In 1940 she was engaged to sing at the Hamburg State Opera and remained a member of that ensemble until the end of her stage career. Guest appearances after the Second World War took her to the State Operas of Vienna, Munich and Stuttgart as well as to London's Covent Garden and La Scala in Milan. Her appearances at the Bayreuth Festival in significant Wagner roles from 1953 to 1958 made her world famous. Most remarkable were her performances in contemporary operas, including works of Milhaud, Ibert, Giselher Klebe and Milko Kelemen. At the Salzburg Festivals of 1948 and 1949 she took part in the first performances of Frank Martin's Le vin herbe and Carl Orff's Antigonae. Sadly neglected by the recording industry (her two 10" Philips discs were quickly removed from the market), this CD allows us to hear this remarkable singer in all her glory (Ilosvay can also be heard this month in the Verdi Requiem [Preiser 20047]).
