This recording of Le Nozze confirms a reading of extraordinary impact right from the beginning with the overture which is crisp, sunny and pulsing. But, it is the entire handling of the opera, from the bright accompaniments of the arias, to the breath of the contralto passages to the freshness of the recitative, that reveals a conductor with superb feeling for Mozart. Maag's Mozart is one that preserves the due lightness and poetry but leaves behind that simpering touch that had been fashionable until then and suddenly discovers all the strength and modernity of his drama
