Ruffo possessed undoubtedly one of the most powerful voices of his era (along with Caruso, he was one of the leading singers of the new verismo school). His voice had a most distinctive timbre which he could shade and color to suit the occasion. As another famous baritone, Giuseppe de Luca, noted, "It is not a voice but a miracle." With his commanding stage presence and thunderous voice, Boris Christoff was the heir to a long tradition of Slavonic basses. The singer courted controversy and clashed with fellow artists, but his legacy as a definitive Boris Godunov lives on.
