This is a reissue that critics and fans of Beethoven have been anticipating for years. The extraordinary pianist Peter Serkin, son of Rudolf Serkin (himself an exceptional interpreter of Beethoven), was asked in 1981 by The Schubert Club in Minneapolis to create recordings utilizing their new Graf fortepiano, the finest specimen of these Beethoven-era pianos in the United States. The recordings were issued to great acclaim, as they marked a great pianist creating remarkable and memorable performances, as well as being the first time Beethoven's last six sonatas were recorded on a high-quality Graf fortepiano. But these performances have been out of print for almost twenty years; the performances of three of these sonatas, including the "Hammerklavier" Sonata, have never been issued on CD.
