Remarks:

The period from 1880 to 1917 saw a rebirth in Russian choral music, which for a century had been dominated by German and Italian influences. Now composers returned to the old Russian chant as the source for their compositions, thus creating a thoroughly indigenous choral style. Although Sergei Rachmaninov (1873-1943) left a modest choral output, these works are among the finest examples of Russian choral music ever written. Among them, the 1915 'Vespers' (also referred to as the 'All-Night Vigil') stands as his crowning achievement and is widely seen as the pinnacle of Orthodox church music as a whole.
