Remarks:

Bruckner's three mature masses were written in the 1860s after six long years of study with Simon Sechter at the Vienna Conservatory. Now in his forties, Bruckner plunged back into composition, developing his style based on the Austrian classical tradition. The symphonies 0 and 1 also date from this period. Crowning his long years of apprenticeship, these works presage the series of timeless masterpieces he went on to compose during his years in Vienna. The longest of the three masses, the Mass in F minor was written in 1868 after Bruckner's recovery from a bout of depression and some consider it a kind of thanks offering.
