Pierre Monteux, arguably the greatest French conductor of the 20th century, was music director of the Boston Symphony from 1918-1924. He maintained a close association with Boston, as this recording of 'The Rite of Spring', taken from a broadcast in April, 1957 shows. He served as music director of the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra from 1935 until 1952, raising the orchestral to a position of national pre-eminence. Four broadcast performances with San Francisco complete this recording of music by Russian composers.Reviews
