Album Reviews:

Down Beat (p.59) - "4 stars out of 5 -- "[H]e's wonderfully liberated on `I Can't Believe That You're In Love With Me' and pumps plenty of hard swinging juice into `I Cried For You.'"

Album Notes

Personnel: Jimmy Rushing (vocals); Al Cohn, Zoot Sims (tenor saxophone); Dave Frishberg (piano); John Beal, Major Holley (bass instrument); Mousie Alexander (drums).

Audio Remasterer: Jon Rosenberg.

THE SCENE, a previously unreleased collection recorded live 1965 in some New York City jazz clubs (the liner notes/credits don't specify), finds blues/jazz singer Jimmy Rushing in the company of the Al Cohn-Zoot Sims Quintet. It might seem an odd combination--the former singer with the Count Basie Band and two cool-cat avatars of Lester Young--but it works perfectly. Cohn and Sims accentuate the blues aspects of their playing, and the rest of their combo--including pianist Dave Frishberg and drummer Mousey Alexander--swings like there's no tomorrow. The recording quality is overall excellent, even with a few rough spots (the piano can sound a little distant at times). Nonetheless, this is a must for fans of Rushing, Cohn, and Sims.
