Respighi (1879-1936) is known to the wide public for his colorful orchestral tone poems, but he had a particular fondness throughout his career for the art song, some with orchestral accompaniment, others (like those recorded here) for voice and piano. These were composed at the height of his creative period, from 1914 to 1920.
