Jazz singer and pianist Shirley Horn achieved a measure of fame and success later in her career, but it was well-deserved, as this LIVE disc attests. Horn's voice had a slightly husky, dusky, seen-it-all quality, and her piano playing is succinct, gently surging, and blues-hued. Backed only by a bassist and drummer, Horn holds the audience in the palm of her hand with her intimate renditions of a healthy variety of material, as she beautifully reconstructs songs by Burt Bacharach and Leon Russell, along with some choice standards and rare gems.
