Album Summary
Notes & Reviews:
Emil Nikolaus von Reznicek was a musical chameleon, stylistically perhaps the most multifaceted composer of German late romanticism, and of all his colleagues perhaps the most difficult to classify. Prior to the beginning of our major cpo edition of his major works a few years ago, he was known only to a few experts as the composer of the Donna Diana overture. In the Chamisso Variations Reznicek interprets a tragic story in an ironic mode, offering the listener a cornucopian plenty of associations, and the genuinely tragic variations on Kol Nidre, the melody with which pious Jews pray to God on Yom Kippur to be released from all vows that they have made unknowingly or without proper consideration.
