Notes & Reviews:

"As serious record collectors will already know, Serge Baudo made some outstanding recordings of French repertoire with the Czech Philharmonic (the Honegger symphonies in particular), and this very interesting project, reissued in its entirety for the first time as a double CD, is fully up to the high standards we have come to expect. The novelty item is Marius Constant's arrangement of music from Debussy's opera as a 24-minute "symphony". It works excellently, and like all of the titles here it's extremely well played by the Czech Philharmonic ca. 1991. Baudo's view of the Schoenberg also is refreshingly tangy and exciting--far from the decadent hog-wallow that some conductors make of it--and in the Sibelius you will hear more of the music's sinister undercurrents (the scene at the spinning wheel, for instance) than many other versions find. How different this music sounds from Faure's elegiac but highly polished and very French textures (the writing for flute and harp in the famous Sicilienne). In short, this warmly recorded, easily recommendable set will fill a gap in many collections very conveniently and enjoyably." -Classics Today
