Notes & Reviews:
The triumvirate of the second Viennese school is complete. After Schonberg and Webern, Steffen Schleiermacher now presents Alban Berg and his pupils in standard-setting piano compositions. According to his own testimony, Berg became a "proper composer" as a result of Schonberg's influence. He had composed more than sixty pieces before completing a piano sonata in 1909 that he regarded as worthy of entering in his work catalogue as his op. 1. His pupil Theodor W. Adorno composed short piano pieces along the lines of miniatures by Schonberg and Weber, but these works were later obscured by his achievements in the fields of philosophy and the aesthetics of music. In one analytic study Adorno proved that Berg did not compose a single note of his op. 1 by mere chance. Everything developed from a strict logic.
BBC Music Magazine
Steffen Schleirmacher's enlightening, cannily programmed series on Teachers and Followers of the Second Viennese School continues with Alban Berg and his pupilsà.Rather than playing up the late-Romantic elements in Berg's language he brings out the essentially contrapuntal nature of his thought, making us feel the sinewy strength of the individual lines... his turbulent, highly emotional reading is superbly phrased and projected.
