Notes & Reviews:
In just a few decades following the last phase of the Reconquista, Spain gradually became the most powerful European state and, with the discovery of America, a world empire of previously unseen proportions. Along with the growth of political power, the flowering of the Iberian art of organ-building attested to Spain's dominant musical culture. Since the 1500s, German and Flemish builders worked there. Despite these outside influences, the music as heard on this disc, is distinctly of a Spanish cast: with its craving for rhythms, this music always reveals the influence of Iberian folklore and even an occasional Middle-Eastern touch.
