Notes & Reviews:
Markku Luolajan-Mikkola has earned distinction as a recital soloist on the viola da gamba and chamber musician. He is a founding member of the celebrated 'Phantasm' viol quartet who also concertizes throughout Europe as a soloist. The music on this CD was composed for the private enjoyment of the French court, an artistic environment which was not always the best of circumstances for composers or players, as patrons proved unreliable employers, stingy with their funds, and sometimes aesthetic philistines. Thankfully, not all royal patrons were musical ignoramuses; many musicians, including Francois Couperin, enjoyed a fertile creative environment, and even economic comfort. 'Pieces de Violes' presents a sampling of Couperin's music written for the royal court, challenging and sophisticated music for a discerning and appreciative audience.
Gramophone Magazine
Markku Luolajan-Mikkola plays with enormous reverence and attention to detail. Yet some listeners will find these performances lacking in panache.
