Notes & Reviews:
The 1824 Naples premiere of 'Alessandro nell’ Indie' established Giovanni Pacini (1796–1867) as one of the city's favorite composers. Using an existing libretto by Metastasio, the action centers on the Indian campaign of Alexander the Great (tenor Bruce Ford), during which he defeats the local king, Poro (mezzo Jennifer Larmore), and falls in love with a native queen, Cleofide (soprano Laura Claycomb). The opera is a vehicle for gorgeously over-the-top bravura singing, as the characters vie in displaying idealistic generosity, fidelity and magnanimity.
BBC Music Magazine
Giovanni Pacini (1796-1867)... was a rival of (in turn) Rossini, Donizetti, Bellini and Verdi. Bruce Ford, Jennifer Larmore and Laura Claycomb bring their roles to a vivid life, and David Parry is a persuasive conductor.
