When Franz Paul Lachner rounded off his compositional oeuvre with three organ sonatas in 1876, he once again demonstrated his love for sacred music. It had been quite some time since the seventy-three-year-old composer had held an organist’s post, and he returned to preludes and fugues from his earlier years.
